…né. à Beyrouth and Bank Audi sal - Audi Saradar Group announced, during a press conference held at Bank Audi Plaza – Bab Idriss on Monday, August 17, 2009, that the 8th edition of the Lebanese Film Festival would take place at Cinema Metropolis (Empire - Sofil) from August 20 to 24.

The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Raymond Audi, Minister of the Displaced and member of the Board of Directors of Bank Audi, Mr. Pierre Sarraf, Director of the Festival, and a number of leading figures of the Lebanese cinema industry, such as Mrs. Aimée Boulos, President of “Fondation Liban Cinema, as well as by a selection of representatives of the Lebanese cultural and artistic press.

Mr. Pierre Sarraf seized the occasion to explain the Festival’s raison d’être: “It’s all about giving Lebanese films the opportunity to be broadcasted, and above all, about emphasizing the vitality of Lebanese movies, the quality of which has substantially improved ever since the launch of our first initiative in 2001. The event is actually much more than a festival since it aims at reflecting the reality of Lebanese cinema, without establishing any hierarchy between different film categories.”

After that, Mr. Nadim Tabet, Artistic Director of the Festival, presented the films selected for this 8th edition: 41 movies out of 150 received, among which Chadi Zeneddine’s film, “Falling from Earth”, a portrait with 5 faces – the portrait of the four main characters, and that of a country and an era – which will be projected at the Festival’s closing session.”

Sarraf added: “The Festival’s objective is also to bring back the past and to give Lebanese cinema lovers the opportunity to get back in touch with their heritage. This is where the participation of “Fondation Liban Cinema” comes in, with an enriching projection of Tele Liban’s archives. This 8th edition of the Festival will also give the audience the chance to meet with Mr. Akram Zaatari, video director and co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation, and Dr. Lars Gass, Director of the Oberhausen Short Film International Festival (Germany).”

As for H.E. Mr. Raymond Audi, he explained the reasons behind Bank Audi’s sponsoring of the Festival, confirming “the Bank’s commitment to all aspects of encouraging culture as the most delicate realisation of social refinement”. Audi insisted on the fact that “any successful Lebanese institution has the duty to expend considerable effort to encourage the blooming of Lebanon’s cultural, artistic and natural heritage” and spoke highly of initiatives such as the Lebanese Film Festival which, like the Bank’s philosophy – Grow Beyond Your Potential –, support Lebanese creativity and represent an endless source of socio-economic development.”

Messrs. Audi and Sarraf ended the conference by announcing the “Bank Audi Best Film Award”, a 2000$ prize for the best movie from all categories selected by a jury composed of Mrs. Hania Mroue and Mrs. Rima Mismar, and Messrs. Lars Gass and Elie Khalife..
